Jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Patagonia, two hours by plane, south of Buenos Aires, this large semi-arid peninsula has been declared a special nature reserve and World Heritage by UNESCO. This is due to the large number of sea mammals and birds which use its protected water and beaches to mate and bring up their off-spring. From September to March, you find elephant seals, sea lions, orcas, penguins, various species of cormorants, skuas, gulls, an occasional Antarctic pigeon. And on land, rheas, guanacos, maras (Patagonian hares), armadillos, herons and birds of prey. In Punta Tombo you will see the largest penguin rookery outside of Antarctica. The southern right whales are in these waters from August to November. Not to be missed by nature lovers.

South of the peninsula is the main town in the area, Trelew, (town of Lewis, in Gaelic), in the valley of the river Chubut The first Europeans to settle here were Welsh, in 1865. There is a very interesting paleontological museum with an excellent collection of dinosaur fossils. Northern Patagonia is one of the three most important sources of dinosaur fossils in the World, comparable to USA/Canada and China/Mongolia.

South of Trelew, one and a half hours by car, is Peninsula Tombo, on the Atlantic coast. It is the largest penguin colony outside of Antarctica. Magallanic penguins come here to mate and breed their chicks, from October to March. At times, there are nearly one million penguins! Many other birds nest here too, various species of cormorants, skuas, gulls
