Here
again, the Andes cordillera present the traveller with an
awesome spectacle. Impressive glaciers coming off the Southern
Ice Shelf, (total surface area is 17.000 km2) the only remains,
in the southern hemisphere, of the last glacial period.
The
main (and only) town in the area, Calafate, is over eight
hours South of Buenos Aires, three and a half hours on a
plane to the town of Rio Gallegos, on the Atlantic coast
and then over 4 hours across the semi-arid and lonely Patagonian
steppes, the real Patagonia! You can visit three or four
glaciers, each different from the other and well worth the
visit.
