Some general information about the country:

Argentina is the 8th largest country in the World, it is approximately 5.300 kms (3.300 miles) from North to South and an average of approximately1.300 kms (750 miles) from East to West, covering 2.800.00 sq. Kms. (it spans from latitude 22º South to 55º South, this means, tropics in the northern territory, semi-arid (in the west) temperate (in the east) and cold temperate in the south.

There are 36.000.000 inhabitants, 1/3 rd of these live within 60 kms from the centre of Buenos Aires, this gives the rest of the country a relatively low density of population. Approximately 94% of the population is of European origin, 40% of these are of Spanish origin, another 40% Italian, other countries of origin are Britain, Germany, Ireland, France, Scandinavia, Netherlands, Poland, the Middle East, etc..

The language is Spanish, the main Religion is Roman Catholic, and there is freedom of religious faiths. Approximately 96% of the population can read and write.

Argentina was part of the Spanish Empire, it became independent in 1816, and it was the first country in America to abolish slavery.

The country has 22 Provinces, each one has its own government. Buenos Aires is the Federal Capital of the country, seat of the National Congress where each Province is represented by Senators and Deputies, in two separate chambers. The President governs from Buenos Aires, he is elected every 4 years.


The main economic activities are agriculture, cattle, oil, some heavy industry, light industry, natural gas, fishing, tourism, and to a lesser extent, timber, paper, wool, temperate climate fruits, wine, services.

The currency is the Peso, (100 centavos), one Peso is equivalent to one US$ dollar, and there are no exchange controls and no restrictions
